Edward Kenway Returns Early: Breaking Down the Leaked Black Flag Remake Footage

A massive wave of gameplay has hit the internet just days before the official July 9 launch. A 30-minute video showing the exact opening of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced was uploaded to Bilibili. The footage seems to come from an early review copy, giving us a completely unfiltered look at how this remake actually plays.

The good news? The core DNA of the 2013 pirate adventure is fully intact, but the modern engine completely changes the feeling of the world.

Small Details, Big Gameplay Changes

Visually, the game utilizes the new Anvil engine to introduce Ray Tracing and Dolby Atmos, bringing the ocean environments closer to the fidelity of the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows. However, the most interesting parts of the leak are the direct fixes to gameplay.

During the initial reveal months ago, fans criticized a strange and heavy animation during the "Leap of Faith" jump. The final build visible in the leak proves that the developers changed it: the jump is now fast, clean, and traditional.

Stealth mechanics receive a nice expansion too. You can now throw money to create quick distractions for guards, or pull targets from a distance using a rope. Exploration is also less restrictive now, allowing you to dive and swim underwater in almost any location on the map without waiting for specific missions.

Fleshing out the Narrative

The leak also shows that Ubisoft is adding tiny narrative details to expand the original story. The build features extra dialogue and new scenes right before you fight Duncan Walpole. This new intro actively portrays Duncan as a deeply incompetent character, which helps explain how Edward manages to steal his identity so easily at the start of his journey.

With six hours of extra content promised for the full release, these small narrative changes indicate that the campaign will have plenty of surprises.
